Starting Your Dentures Journey: What to Expect in Your First Month

As you get ready to receive your dentures, you may be excited about the many benefits they’ll bring. They will help you enjoy your favorite foods while showing off a full smile, but you will need to get adjusted to them initially. The first month with this prosthetic can be difficult, but knowing what to expect can help eliminate any surprises. Here’s what to know and how you can make this transition easier for you.

During the First Day

Some patients might’ve gotten a tooth extraction to prepare for this prosthetic. Many dentists often say to wear it for 24 hours straight during this scenario, but they might also recommend it even if you didn’t get this preliminary treatment. Doing so can help avoid irritating your gums, as it acts like a bandage.

While you may wear it through the night this first time, it’s crucial you take it out during bedtime afterward. It can help give your mouth a break and let your gums breathe. Just be sure to soak them to preserve their shape and clean them.

A Couple of Weeks In

You are likely to develop some denture sores. This condition can happen to anyone, regardless of whether you’re a first-time or long-time wearer. You may have minor discomfort, so stick to soft foods that are easy to chew.

Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and pudding are some that don’t put too much pressure on your sensitive gums. Remember this is only temporary, so you’ll be able to introduce slightly tougher foods as your full smile becomes comfortable.

Many people also often develop a slight lisp. It can feel awkward or embarrassing, but you can practice speaking clearly by reading aloud. Record yourself and listen back to your pronunciation to correct anything that doesn’t sound right. Consider doing this with a trusted individual, and you can get a different perspective on your speech.

After One Month

After a quick 30 days or so, you may be fully used to your dentures! For some, it may be a bit sooner or longer, but be sure to give yourself some leeway. This transition period is only a tiny fraction compared to the years of comfort you have ahead.

Keep in mind what to expect while you have this modern restoration. That way, you feel confident knowing you have made the right choice for your oral health. Look forward to getting a rebuilt smile that helps you feel your best once again.
