Laser Gum Disease Therapy in Arcadia

The mouth is a portal to the entire body – after all, everything from air to food to medication goes through it. The fact that bacteria is constantly fed into the body as well may account for why almost 80% of Americans have some form of gum disease. It’s no surprise that recent studies show a significant link between gum disease and overall health problems. Furthermore, most adult tooth loss in the U.S. is attributed to this disease.

Bacteria in the mouth produce a sticky film called plaque. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar or calculus. If you don’t visit the dental hygienist for teeth cleanings and don’t brush and floss daily, the tartar will build up and begin to irritate your gum tissue. Bacteria create pockets between the gums and teeth, and they flourish in the dark, warm environment. Healthy gum tissue then becomes infected, and it can deteriorate and die. People with gum disease may not experience symptoms in the early stages, but when the disease progresses, they’ll start to see blood as they brush their teeth. Also, the gums soon become swollen, red, and sensitive, and teeth begin to loosen. The bacteria can cause bad breath (halitosis), as well.

To remove the bacteria that cause gum disease, Dr. Canzoneri and our hygiene team provide periodontal laser therapy. Our Waterlase dental laser targets bacteria growing inside periodontal pockets. The powerful light literally vaporizes the bacteria to leave gums clean and free from infection. In the absence of bacteria, gums heal and reattach to teeth.

We have found laser gum therapy minimally invasive and very comfortable. It also promotes prompt healing and recovery. As your trusted dentist, Dr. Canzoneri considers staying on top of contemporary technology his number one priority! If you have questions about laser gum therapy or think you may have developed gum disease, we’ll be happy to talk with you.
